EURO-VISION ... NOW IN AFRICA!

An exciting milestone in the South African Music Industry will be taking
place on Sunday, 12th December 2004, when the Sound Stage Theatre in Midrand
plays host to the South African finals of the very first Afric-a-vision
Songwriting Competition as a lead-in to Africa participating for the first
time in the Eurovision Contest in mid-2005, taking place in the Ukraine.

The Eurovision Contest (previous contestants and winners include ABBA, Cliff
Richard and Celine Dion) celebrates it's 50th Anniversary in 2006 and plan
to restructure the event to make it a Global Contest with Africa being the
first continent - aside for Europe - to be invited to participate. South
Africa is going to be the proud host of the All Africa Event taking place in
March 2005.

Afric-a-vision is a Song-writing Contest where Artists were invited to
submit original songs that hadn't been previously play-listed for
consideration. A Panel of Judges from the Entertainment Industry adjudicated
the entrants, resulting in 20 finalists from around the country being chosen
for the South African Finals.

This ground-breaking event will take place on Sunday, 12th December 2004 at
the Sound Stage Theatre in Midrand starting at 7:30pm where all 20
contestants will perform their song live before the judges and audience. The
winner will go on to participate in the All Africa Competition, representing
South Africa against all other African countries to represent Africa at
2005's prestigious Eurovision Song Contest, viewed by millions of television
viewers worldwide.

The evening on Sunday promises to be jam-packed with original music and
showcasing the best musical talent that South Africa has to offer, as
performed by the 20 finalists.

As Eurovision has done for so many European performers, so too will
Afric-a-vision become an international platform for African performers to
showcase their talents.

This will be quite a good laugh, but only if they include Terry Wogan's side
comments.
The Eurovision is really pathetic otherwise and I do not think that their
attempts at patronising the African countries will make it any more
exciting. The collusion between European countries is always clearly
obvious. One country trots out a putrid act and gets a 10 from a clear
caucus partner and the reciprocal gesture is clearly seen when the other
brings theirs out. The year before last Britain got no votes, despite having
a good entrant. The last year was not much better. The stitch up was clear
from the start and was comedic. The UK performers are just behind the
Americans on the world market in music moneymaking so it is quite an
eyeopener for them to come last. ( That statement naturally excludes India
and China)

Wogan's comments make it all worthwhile. He described last years winners,
The Ukraine as " Zena the warrior princess and her ram jam band". This was
very funny comment when viewed in conjunction with their ridiculous outfits.
I must honestly say that this is not your average case of sour grapes, the
staging was so badly perpetrated as to be really comical. The Ukranian
attempt at europopheavymetalfolkmusicwas very amateurish.

I do not think Africa will fare well in the highly competitive political
environment of the Eurovision song contest, as new entrants they just do not
have the lobbying and caucusing skills to get to the top. We can be consoled
that their music will be excellent, but ey look at what happened to our
soccer bid a few years ago. There is the Chance that the Eurovision will get
an instruction from Brussels to be beaten by an African - so let's hold out
some hope for this.
