Computicket turns 33 today

Percy Tucker celebrates 3 anniversaries today, August 16th, 2004

Fifty years ago today, the 16th August, I opened 'Show Service', South
Africa's first professional theatre and booking office at 100 Eloff Street.
Johannesburg. In 1960 we moved to Rand Central in Jeppe Street (the site of
the old Bijou Cinema).

17 years later again on the 16th August, 1971, I opened the first
computerised reservations system in the world called 'Computicket; which is
today totally nationwide and handles every conceivable inventory consisting
of thousands of events, across the whole spectrum of entertainment.
Computicket was the first system in the world to successfully launch
computerised reservations for the entertainment industry.

On the 16th August, 1994, I retired as MD of Computicket.

On Saturday night (Aug 14th) at an exhibition of 'Great South African
Inventions' held at the MTN Science Centre at Canal Walk in Cape Town, I was
honoured as 'Computicket' was chosen as one the top ten great South African
inventions.

In my address, I thanked all the wonderful staff who assisted me over the
years and well as our loyal clients and sent greetings to all the current
management and staff.

The exhibition which features the birth of 'Show Service' to its successor
'Computicket' and all the wonderful theatres and personalities who have
passed through its doors, will be on in Cape Town until the end of December
before it goes on a national tour.

Anyone wishing to have a personal tour, contact me on 083 377 9388.

Actually this is a lovely feature of South African life. One has "always"
been able to select the show one wishes to see and to actually book seats.
In more recent years this has been possible to do telephonically or on the
internet. Then one can collect the tickets shortly before the show. Or, as
I do, whenever I'm at the Civic Theatre where Computicket has the outlet
which is most conveniently situated for my lifestyle.

For most of my activities I don't need this feature. I just turn up at the
theatre and get tickets on the evening, but there are some shows for which
one must pre-book. And then the beauty of Computicket kicks in. For
example, for Phantom of the Opera in Pretoria we did a telephonic block
booking in excess of 100 seats through the theatre. The money was deposited
into the Computicket account and I collected the tickets at the Civic
theatre. Easy, hey?

When I used the bus to get to work I was able to do my top ups at
Computicket which meant I could do them easily and conveniently rather than
having to stand in queues at the bus terminus.
